Contingency Plan

Locations:

Parsloes Park- Dagenham

Above is the location we decided to use for our music video- Parsloes Park. This is because it is a local park that is hardly occupied during the hours we want to film meaning it is less likely for us to be distracted by school kids playing and running around. Although a downside of this location is that we may have people walking their dogs, this park is always free and available to us in which no permission is required for filming. We felt as though the lighting would be good as we would be filming during day time and our artist would demonstrate that he is stranded outside.

However, as it is Winter, the chances of it raining or snowing is quite high. Therefore, for our contingency location, we have decided to use the drama studio and the music room which is indoors and is unlikely to be in use during the hours we want to film which is not during lessons or exams.

Filming

Thursday 13th December 2012

Today was our first day of filming and unfortunately, we wasn't able to use our original location which was Parsloes Park because it was raining during the hours we all planned to meet and film.  Consequently, we managed to film the climax of our music video in the music room.This went well because we used all of the props that we planned to use and also had a band involved in the video as a bonus which made it look more realistic. However, we felt as though we needed more energy from our actor. The lack of energy is understandable because there were other people besides our group watching him perform, which may have made him feel uncomfortable and a bit nervous although he said he weren't. Therefore by just our group being there tomorrow, we hope to get more enthusiasm from him when filming the rest of the track, especially at the chorus where it consists of yelling.

Friday 14th December 2012

Today was our second day of filming. I feel as though today was good because we managed to get a lot more things done such as filming the rest of our music video using the second location that we planned. It seems that our actor was more enthusiastic and energetic and I took part in a few shots of the music video which the group and I thought may be of good use to it.  However, the downside of today is that the camera took quite long to focus as a result of the lens being quite dirty. This made some of our footage blurry; nevertheless, this is why we chose to film a couple of days before the deadline, in circumstances like this where we may need to re-do some of the shots.

CONCEPT

Freytag's Theory:

Freytag argues that all stories start off with a setting a scene- known as the Exposition.
Then, the Rising Action takes place; when the story develops a problem/dialemma which is built towards the climax. Next, is the Climax which is the turning point and the highest intensity of the story either emotionally or through action.
After this, its the Falling Action of the story where tall the are mysteries are trying to being solved and they are finding solutions to things. Lastly, its the Resolution/Denouement, where all the mysteries are finally solved and most of the time justice is served.

A good example of Freytag's Theory is the unforgettable movie 'Titanic'.
Beginning- everyone's on ship happily
Rising Action- development of relationship between Rose and Jack
Climax- The ship crashes
Falling Action- Rescue boats came out, people die, Rose survives
Resolution/Denouement- The search for the necklace was pointless because Rose had it all along.

Narrative Pitch:

This is the narrative pitch that me and Junior produced in terms of what our music video is going to be based on. In our music video, although the music video is originally meant to be a serious love song, we decided to add a fun and crazy element to it.

The narrative pitch for our selected music video “Its Not Your Fault” is going to be a Male Artist expressing his feelings for a girl in “rocky” sort of way. He feels as though this is the best way to express his regrets for his previous girlfriend who he had mistreated. The phrase “its not your fault” dominates the song in terms of being in the chorus quite alot, and therefore emphasizes his regrets for his domestic abuse it caused for his girl friend.  He would demonstrate his love for the girl in various ways throughout he music video through his facial expressions and body language.

Our market research illustrates that women listen to electric music most, therefore appealing to them to buy this track, it is likely that women who listen to music videos may have been a victim of an abusive relationship therefore the song would relate to them personally making them feel as though they have found favor, this I mean in terms of them not being the only woman in the world going through this. In a way it could also inform them that not all men want to do what they do, therefore men could also listen to this song and allow them to realize what they are doing is wrong. Although mainly women listen to our chosen music genre “Electric” men also do listen to this music genre as well, this means that men who are physically abusing their partner would allow them to realize what they are doing is totally wrong, this is based on the fact an artist in their favorite music genre has expressed their own regrets and would allow these men to re evaluate themselves.

Story Board:

Costume:

Our actor would be dressed in a rocky sort of outfit. This could be a punky top and trousers, more likely to be a black colour.

This is on the left is evidence of us seeking permission to use the music video from the band 'AWOLNATION' which is commonly known as copy right permission. This is crucial because  using the track from the music video without consent could be considered as theft and we could get in serious trouble for it and possibly get sued for it

Story Boards

Monday 3rd December 2012

In today's lesson, we learnt about 2-Column Story-Boarding. I feel that this method is more effective that the modern day story boarding because it is less time-consuming as sketches of pictures are not needed. It has clarity and simplicity as there are only 2 columns that could be filled with as much information as you want however it has to be easy to understand and not too complex.

We also thought of things of what we feel makes a good-quality story board;

Features of good-quality Story Boards;
  • Has to be part of narrative idea
  • Clear shot angles/distance
  • Movement of camera/actor
  • Shot length specified
  • Sound could be included
  • Lighting could be included
  • SFX could be included
  • Has to be realistic
  • Storyboard the whole sequence
  • Action of shot has to be clear/whats happening

Secondary Research

For our secondary research we wanted to find out why the people from our focus groups were attracted to their favourite music artist such as Kelly Rowland, Adele and Lady Angelo.

Since secondary research already exists, I visted some websites in order to find this out.

People like Adele because;
  • She has a strong tone to her voice
  • She "keeps it real"
  • She sings with passion
  • Her lyrics have true meaning eg. "Rolling in the Deep"
  • Her lyrics relate to people's lives
  • Her music is interesting and somewhat unique
  • Her music is catchy
  • Looks like a humble, mature woman

People like Kelly Rowland because;
  • Shes fun and energetic
  • She has "swagger"
  • "I started to like her from when she became a judge on the X-Factor"
  • Great personality
  • Love her music very seductive
  • She's very attractive- went nude for the magazine Vibe Cover
  • I love her different hairstyles
From this data we could try and represent our artist in the best way possible. We could make sure they take some vocal lessons in order to get a strong tone to their voice like Adele. We could ensure our artist has a great personality so that viewers wouldnt be bored and and gain interest in the music through the love of the artist. The more likeable a music artist is, the more likely people would be fascinated by their lifestyles and the music they produce, they are more likely get many fans and viewers.
